Snow drops in on Bennett County

The weather forecasters were calling for about an inch of snow overnight Friday and they missed it a bit as the amount of white fluffy precip varied from less than an inch on the southern border of the county, to about 8 inches in some areas by Saturday morning. The warm ground went to work on melting off some areas, including roads.

Pisha’s art to show at Ritz Gallery

South Dakota State University senior Allison Pisha will hold her senior visual arts exhibition March 21-24 at the Ritz Gallery in Grove Hall on the SDSU campus. The exhibit is free and open to the public. The Ritz Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Pisha’s exhibit, titled “In the Making,” includes drawings in various mediums, prints and animated works.

Laura Hicks and Zac Real Dedication

Laura Hicks was given a border collie puppy and she knew Zac was something special when she saw him working ducks at eight weeks old.

Laura had been interested in sheep dog training and trials when Zac came into her life. Thus began a working relationship that spanned 14 years.

Arrival of Spring brings City Clean up Month

With the arrival of Spring, Martin’s City Council approved April being designated as Clean Up Month, with free use of the City Dump by residents, within posted regulations.

All council members, along with Mayor Gary Rayhill, were present at the regular meeting held Wednesday, March 9.

Thorpes hit century mark, defeat Lady Warriors

Pine Ridge used hot outside shooting and turned Lady Warrior turnovers into points to run away with a 103-38 win in the opening round of Region 7A girls high school basketball play  Feb. 23 in Pine Ridge. 

Pine Ridge would then host Winner and lose 50-47 in the second round. Winner played top seed Little Wound March 1, for the right to go to the State A tournament.

Shawna Lessert has won 1st place in the Sioux Indian Museum 2015-1016 Youth Art Contest. The contest was sponsored by the Indian Arts and Crafts Board, US Department of the Interior. Her watercolor resist painting entitled “A Bright Recognition” was on display at the Journey Museum in Rapid City during the month of February. Shawna received a 1st place ribbon and monetary award.

James Nelson takes sixth at State Wrestling Tournament

James Nelson was the lone Bennett County High School wrestler to make the medal stand at the South Dakota State B Wrestling Tournament Friday and Saturday in Rapid City, taking sixth place at 220 pounds.

Four other wrestler competed, but did not place.

At 170 pounds, Senior Chandler Bakley finished the year with an impressive 43-8 record, but he lost two close matches and fell short of placing.…
