Bennett County used an outstanding defensive performance and big runs by Tee Allen and Daniel Winsand to knock off Lead-Deadwood 35-16 in the first round of the high school football playoffs Tuesday in Martin.

The Warriors moved the ball well all night on the ground, scoring first on a four yard run by Sophomore Tee Allen. Brendan Kamerzell’s kick after made it 7-0.

Allen scored again, this time on defense, as he picked off a Lead-Deadwood pass on an outstanding one handed grab, as he went high in the air, then ran it back 81 yards for a touchdown.  The ball was initially tipped on a good play by Isaiah Johnson. Kamerzell was good again on the kick after to make it 14-0 with 10:25 to play in the second quarter.

Kamerzell’s kickoff went down the right sideline and the Lead-Deadwood return players thought it was going to go out of bounds, but it stopped inches from the line and was recovered at the 27 by Bennett County’s Isaiah Johnson, setting the Warriors with great field position.

Daniel Winsand bolted around the right side for a 25 yard touchdown run a play later and Kamerzell added the extra point for a 21-0 Warrior lead.

That would be the final scoring of the half, but Bennett County found the end zone on a 39 yard run by Allen with just over three minutes gone in the third. Kamerzell’s kick was good for a 28-0 lead.

Seth Livermont picked off a Digger pass and returned it 48 yards to set up the Warriors with excellent field position. Allen scored another touchdown, but a holding call nullified the score and the Warriors would not score after that.

On the Warriors next possession, they were forced to punt and the snap sailed over Kamerzell’s head and Lead-Deadwood took over at the 15 of Bennett County. They capitalized on the play and scored to make it 28-8 after the run for conversion.

Bennett County answered right back with a 63 yard touchdown run by Daniel Winsand to make it 35-8 after the Kamerzell kick.

Lead-Deadwood tacked on a score with 24 seconds left to make it a final of 35-16.

Bennett County will travel to Groton Monday for round two of the playoffs. Groton is about 20 miles east of Aberdeen, about a five hour drive for Warrior fans. Game time is set for 6 p.m. MT
