Michael Joseph Hawk “Wanbli Hoksila”, 85, of Oglala, S.D., passed away April 9, 2017, in Oglala.
He was a veteran of the US Army.
Michael Joseph Hawk was born on November 19, 1931, in the Drywood Community North of Oglala, to Tal and Jennie (Hat) Hawk. Michael made his journey to the Spirit World on April 9, 2017 at his home in the Drywood Community.
Michael is survived by his daughters, Tillie Hawk, Rapid City, and Joy (Josef) Marks, Chesapeake, VA; son, Daniel Garneaux, Chesapeake; brothers, Lambert (Mary) Hawk, Pine Ridge, and Steven (Pru) Hawk, Oglala; sister, Sarah (Darold) Forney, Oglala; 14 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Michael was preceded in death by his daughter, Beverly Hawk; son, Lee Hawk; and sisters, Phoebe Thunder Horse and Tillie White.
A one night wake service started at 4:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 12, at the Brother Rene Hall in Oglala, with Mass of Christian Burial at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday evening at Brother Rene Hall.
Funeral services began at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, April 13, at the Brother Rene Hall in Oglala, with Father Joe Dauost, S.J. and Sister Barb Bogenschutz officiating and Mr. Ivis Long Visitor performing the traditional Lakota service.
Burial services were held at the Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Cemetery in Oglala.
