Verna Elma (Brave) Yellow Horse “Khanta Luta Wiyan”, 74, of Oglala, S.D., passed away May 20, 2017, in Pine Ridge.
Verna Elma (Brave) Yellow Horse was born on May 14, 1943, in Oglala, to Milton, Sr. and Sara (Belt) Brave. Verna made her journey to the Spirit World on May 20, 2017, at the Pine Ridge I.H.S. Hospital in Pine Ridge.
Verna is survived by her sons, Jake Yellow Horse, Greg Yellow Horse, and Gabriel E. Janis all of Oglala, and Michael A. Two Elk, Sandstone, Minn.; sister, Regina Brave, Oglala; 11 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
Verna was preceded in death by her parents, Milton, Sr. and Sara Brave; spouse, Verdell Yellow Horse, Sr.; sons, Ian “Hoss” Yellow Horse, Donald “Breeze” Yellow Horse, and Vladimir Scott Yellow Horse; brothers, Verne Brave, Milton Brave, Jr., Anthony Brave, and one baby brother in infancy; sisters, Georgiana Brave, Dora Brave, and Susan Brave; maternal grandparents, Lizzie Walks Out and Frank Belt; and paternal grandparents, Charles Brave and Susan Helper.
A one night wake service started at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 23, at the Brother Rene Hall in Oglala.
Funeral services will begin at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 24, at the Brother Rene Hall in Oglala, with Mike Catches Enemy performing the traditional Lakota service.
Burial services will be held at Our Lady of Good Counsel Cemetery in Oglala.
