Joseph Lee Catches, 44, of Pine Ridge, S.D., passed away December 8, 2017, in Rapid City.

Joseph Lee Catches was born on October 9, 1973, in Bridgeport, Neb. to Regina Tobacco and Dale Catches, Sr. Joseph made his journey to the Spirit World on December 8, 2017, at the Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City.

Joseph is survived by his mother, Regina Tobacco, Calico; children, Jolissa Catches, Julianna Catches, and Lillianna Catches all of Alliance, Neb.; brothers, Dale “Tuffy” Catches and Harold William Tobacco both of Calico, Wayland Gene Tobacco and Dale Glen Warrior, Jr. both of Chadron, Chad Wayne Tobacco and Jonathan Catches both of Rapid City, Harley Catches and Danny Boy Tobacco both of Pine Ridge; sisters, Heather Rose Poor Bear, Wounded Knee, Cora Lee Warrior, Theresa Catches, and Lora Catches all of Calico, Shelly Irene (Warrior) Goings, Chadron, Nona Jean Warrior, Rapid City, Tia Catches, Oelrichs, and Kelly Catches, Pierre; significant other, Stephanie Little Bear, Pine Ridge; and step-children, Tera Jo Marks, Rapid City, Nikki Marks, Derek Marks, Clarinda DuBray, and Jeremiah Marks all of Pine Ridge.

Joseph was preceded in death by his father, Dale Catches, Sr.; siblings, Lisa Marie Tobacco, Jesse Dean Tobacco, and Manuel Catches; grandmothers, Adeline Catches and Irene (Wounded) Tobacco; and grandfather, Vincent Tobacco, Sr.

A two night wake service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, December 14, at the Billy Mills with the second night at 5:00 p.m., Friday, December 15, at the Brother Rene Hall in Oglala. 

Rosary services will begin at 7:00 p.m., Friday, December 15, at the Brother Rene Hall in Oglala.

Funeral services will begin at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, December 16, at the Brother Rene Hall in Oglala, with Father Joe Daoust, S.J., Sister Barb Bogenschutz, Mr. Charles McGaa, and Pastor Stanley Hollow Horn officiating. Mr. Pete Catches, Jr. will perform the traditional Lakota service. 

Burial services will be held at the Tobacco Family Cemetery in Calico.
