Bennett County opened the 2016 football season on the road this year, dropping a 30-14 decision to Cheyenne-Eagle Butte last Friday.
The host Braves jumped to a 22-0 lead at the half and held off the Warriors for the win.
Warrior Senior Adam Hahn had a solid game with a team leading 10 tackles, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery on defense. Hahn also had a touchdown reception in the fourth quarter.
Sophomore Tee Allen rambled for 208 yards on 28 carries, scoring one touchdown for a good offensive night for him.
Tyler Byrne added eight tackles, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble, and Brendan Kamerzell also had eight tackles for the Warriors.
“Overall I was pleased with the effort the athletes maintained through the game,” said head coach Tucker Risse. “Especially where Cheyenne-Eagle Butte jumped out to a 22-0 lead at half, causing frustration for players and coaches. However, we made some half time adjustments and reminded the athletes to be disciplined. Their ability to respond and stay motivated allowed us to win the second half 14-8. Even though we lost 30-14, the athletes showed me more of their ability, by responding positively in adversity.”
The Warriors have a bye this week, then travel to Deadwood Sept. 9, to face the Lead-Deadwood Golddiggers. Their first home game is Sept. 16 against Gordon-Rushville. Homecoming is set for Sept. 23 against Little Wound.
