Local cowboys and cowgirls dominate at SDHSR

The South Dakota State High School Rodeo Finals was a huge success for six local cowboys and cowgirls. Tee Allen, Lyle Dillon, Lante Swallow, Carson Good, Mary Risse, and Karissa Rayhill all earned trips to Gillette, Wyo. July 13-22, for the National High School Finals Rodeo.

Karissa Rayhill had an outstanding weekend, qualifying for nationals in two events, goat tying and barrel racing, and winning herself the Reserve All Around title. Karissa brought home the goat tying title and a saddle for her solid runs at the finals. Her results are as follows:

Barrel racing: 2nd place; 1st go 18.023; 2nd go 17.591; short go 17.309

Breakaway: 6th place; 1st go 2.710; 2nd go no time; short go 3.36

Goat tying: 1st place; 1st go 7.510; 2nd go 7.410; short go 9.340 

Poles: 5th place; 1st go 21.569; 2nd go 21.706; short go 21.359

Lyle Dillon dominated the bull riding being the only cowboy to make two rides. In the 1st go he scored a 57; 2nd go no time; short go a 72, winning himself the 1st place saddle.

Carson Good showed up and took the steer wrestling title with ease having a total time of 20.330 with a 6.810 in the 1st go; 6.040 in the 2nd go; and a 7.480 in the short go. Carson was also awarded the Brian Fulton Memorial saddle. His other results are:

Team roping: 5th place; 1st go no time; 2nd go 9.48; short go 15.160

Calf roping: No times in the 1st and 2nd go’s

Mary Risse squeezed into the 4th place slot in the goat tying winning her a trip to the NHSFR despite a few road bumps. She had an outstanding moment when she tied the fast time of the weekend with a 6.56 right after fighting with a broken bridle. The rest of her results include:

Goat tying: 4th place; 1st go 8.420; 2nd go 6.56; short go 13.93

Breakaway roping: 13th; 1st go no time; 2nd go 3.84; short go 3.57

Tee Allen won himself his first trip to the NHSFR by taking second in bull riding. He had a good ride in the second go with a score of 72.

Lante Swallow had a good trip to the state finals riding into second in barebacks sticking all three of his rides. His scores were a 54 in the 1st go; 69 in the 2nd go; and in the short go a 70.

Tyler Byrne had a good weekend but struggled to slip into a national qualifying spot. His results:

Steer wrestling: 7th place; 1st go 23.730; 2nd go 7.030; short go 10.130

Team roping: 8th place; 1st go 12.440; 2nd go 13.850; short go no time

Calf roping: 12th place; 1st go 13.090; 2nd go no time; short go 12.230

Keisha Rayhill competed in four events. 

Barrel racing: 61st place; 1st go 19.028; 2nd go 18.727

Breakaway: 66th place; 1st go 5.960

Goat tying: 17th place; 1st go 12.950; 2nd go 15.420

Poles: 56th place; 1st go 23.139; 2nd go 25.678

Jeryn Robinson competed in two events.

Barrel racing: 48th place; 1st go 18.682; 2nd go 18.310

Poles: 61st place; 1st go 23.165; 2nd go 23.233

Carissa Louden competed in breakaway ending up 37th with a no time in the 1st go and a 6.42 in the 2nd go.

Tarryn Petrak had a tough go in the breakaway not getting any times.
