Bennett County Future Farmers of America (FFA) members attended their first FFA State Convention in Brookings, S.D., April 7-9. It was the 91st South Dakota FFA Convention. In attendance from Bennett County was Laney Fanning, Tim Fanning, Frank Huber, and Ridge Ward.
Tim, Frank, and Ridge competed in the Livestock Evaluation Career Development Event (CDE), and Laney competed in the Floriculture CDE.
They didn’t place in their competitions, but they learned a lot and got some inspiration for next year! We went to three sessions where we watched FFA members from across the state get recognized for their achievements in FFA, and I reminded each of them that they had the potential and ability to be up on stage next year to be recognized for some sort of achievement.
I challenged them to make a personal goal to work towards one of those achievements over the next year. Some of them also had the opportunity to explore the Career Carnival and participate in the Living to Serve Project.
Living to Serve Day gives FFA members the opportunity to remove their traditional blue corduroy jackets and roll up their sleeves to help stop hunger.
Before returning to beat the storm home we toured the SDSU Sheep Unit and Sioux Falls Butterfly House and Aquarium. It was a fun and successful trip!
