Special Foods Contest delights the senses!

By Marj Frew

The Catholic Church basement smelled like the Fall Dinner was being held, but it was the 4-H Special Foods Contest being held on Wednesday, July 17.

The contest theme this year was “Master Chef,” with one division having a secret ingredient being chosen.

Smoothie Division

This division was for the younger contestants,  Cloverbuds and Beginners.

The contestants prepared a smoothie of their choice, which would serve four or more, for the judge within a 30 minute time frame.

Louis Novotny earned a purple ribbon for his  Strawberry Smoothie creation which included frozen strawberries, milk, and strawberry jam.

Josie Tish made a patriotic Red and White Smoothie which included a strawberry fruit bar, strawberries, blueberries, non-fat yogurt, and coconut. Her concoction won a purple ribbon.

Ashley Farley brought a Purple Cow to the contest. Her Purple Cow Smoothie was made with grape juice, ice cream, lots of whipped cream, and sprinkles. She earned a blue ribbon, and ate all the whipped cream.

Rachel Farley created a refreshing Pineapple Mango Banana Smoothie. It included frozen mango, pineapple chunks, banana, and Sprite. She earned a purple ribbon.

Pick a Secret Ingredient List Division

Contestants in this fun category were a beginner, junior, or senior in 2018-2019 Bennett County 4-H. An ingredient list was available beforehand.

A dish which serves four or more was completed within a one hour time frame.

Alison Novotny created  Porcupine Meatballs, with a recipe that used ground beef, minute rice, onion soup mix, salt, spaghetti sauce, and butter. Waiting for the oven timer was the hardest part! They looked so good! She earned a purple ribbon.

Jadyn Boomer prepared a Chicken Breast Meal, earning a purple ribbon. Her three course meal included chicken breasts, turmeric, salt and pepper, and a pinch of parsley; broccoli; and mashed potatoes made with butter, milk, salt and pepper, and also parsley. It’s a shame the photographer couldn’t stay to sample!

Charlee Richardson used her allotted time wisely as she prepared an Italian Sausage Ravioli Casserole Meal. The casserole included Italian sausage, onion, ravioli, garlic, pasta sauce, and mozzarella cheese. While that cooked she prepared Oven Roasted Aspargus with asparagus, parmesan cheese, olive oil, and seasoning. She topped it off with Patriotic Strawberries which featured vanilla frosting and  blue sugar sprinkles on the whole strawberries. YUM! What a delicious way to earn a purple ribbon.
