Strand and Harding present serious workshop to students and parents

By Marj Frew

Holly Strand and Elliott Harding spoke to Bennett County Junior and Senior High students on Monday, October 21, about their student footprints and the issues of texting and sexting.

Harding is a detective with the South Dakota Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, based out of the Rapid City Police Force. Strand is a forensic examiner with the same task force. She is also a former Chief of Police in Martin.

Their presentation to the students concentrated on how their actions online, or digitally, can affect them for their entire life. They spoke on the serious subject of sexting, and how to protect themselves from the real dangers online.

The information for parents in the evening stressed the fact that almost every device is online or is internet connected. Their no-nonsense information brought to life the dangers present in our children’s lives, whether they are aware of it, or not.

They stressed the absolute importance of parents monitoring their children’s devices for helping them avoid the unwanted contact from would-be predators.

Many handouts were available at the meeting, and are also available at the school. For more information contact Belinda Ready, at Bennett County Schools.
