The latest Physician’s Assistant to join the staff at Bennett County Hospital, Nursing Home and Rural Health Clinic, James Awuah, P.A., is playing a vital role in expanding the scope of the Home Health services in the county.
James first came to Martin in May of 2018, working at the Bennett County Hospital, Nursing Home and Clinic, through a University of South Dakota (USD) Physician Assistant program for rural health. He graduated from USD and took a job at the same facility in December of 2018 because he liked the medical team in place so much.
With James’ addition, there are four physician assistants (PA) on staff, including Jason Bustin, Hannah Brown and Jenny Risse.
With four PAs on staff, that opens the door to allow James to provide something home health has not had in the area, a home visiting PA.
James’ specialty is in public health, and sees setting up practice in Martin and assisting the home health program as a good fit.
“Our goal is to keep people safe and at home if we can,” said James, referring to the home health program. “Going to the home, you are able to see the environment they are in. In this program, we are offering the patients a better healthcare option.”
James sees home health as an extension of the services available to those at home with some limitations.
