Eden Fanning named to USA National Classic Bench Press Team

By Tim Huether

Eden Fanning was getting ready to play in a girls high school basketball game for the Bennett County Lady Warriors against Wall on January 11, when her mom, Tara, received a call informing them Eden had been chosen to represent the United States on the USA Powerlifting National Classic Bench Press Team.

Eden and her family were excited about the news and shared it with Eden’s lifting coach, Nick Redden. Redden, the Bennett County High School principal and head boys basketball coach, was coaching the boys team that night and was also very excited about the news.

Eden was selected for the team in great part because of her performance at the Nationals last year and other solid performances over the past year.

Eden will travel with her teammates to the Czech Republic May 15-23, to compete at the Women’s International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) World Sub Junior Classic Bench Press Championship. She will compete at 57 Kg (125.6 lbs.).

She started lifting about four years ago as a way to get in shape for athletics and from there, she took off, dedicating herself to getting better and better in everything she does. She has only been powerlifting for a little over a year.

Redden said she has been a joy to coach and watch how she has progressed, saying, “anytime you have a student who is dedicated and spends the time like she does, you are going to see good results.”

Eden credits Coach Redden for pushing her and said she has learned a lot from him. Redden quickly points out he has also learned a lot from Eden as she strives to get better and picks things up on her own. Redden has been at every meet she has competed in.

“It’s been a good learning thing for the both of us,” said Redden.

Her parents are Josh and Tara Fanning of Martin.

“I get to represent our country in a different country,” said Eden with an excited grin. “I believe I am the only one from South Dakota going. My national team coach was shocked to find out I come from such a small town.”
