Martin Chamber installs time capsule at Library

By Tim Huether

The Martin Area Chamber of Commerce put the finishing touches on a time capsule that has been in the works for more than a year, installing it at the Bennett County Library June 20, following the monthly meeting.

The initial plan for the capsule was to bury it in the ground with instructions to dig it up in 100 years. Later into the project, it was decided it may be lost in the course of time, so it was to put it in a place where it could still be viewed in the present day, at the library.

Chamber member Rolf Kraft was the project coordinator and gathered up many local items from area businesses and other photos or documents of interest. A special cylinder contains most of the documents but others are placed in a special cedar box made by Ken Spears.

The box is on the west wall of the library at the top of a shelf.

At the Chamber meeting, co-president Andrea Fanning announced two new members, Candace Volmer from the Bombshell and Grover Spears from the Pizza Shoppe.

The July 4 celebration was discussed with Joyce Wilson the chairperson for that event. The Martin Volunteer Fire Department is putting on a pancake breakfast the morning of July 4 as a benefit for Harold Koenig. There will be food and fun in the park beginning at 6 p.m. followed by fireworks at dusk.

There is also a Triathlon beginning at 8 a.m. at the swimming pool.

The Chamber’s Crazy Days and Rummage Sale ran into bad weather, but it was reported there was still good traffic and many people with booths did well.

On Friday, July 26, the Fire Department will be having a street dance and Bair Ford will be hosting another Drive One For Your Community event with the beneficiary the Inland Theatre project. The Chamber will be sponsoring a car show that day also to help make it a bigger day in town.

The Chamber will again be sponsoring the parade during the Bennett County Fair and Rodeo this year again with the parade set for Saturday, Aug. 10, at 12 noon.

Rolf Kraft updated the chamber members on the status of the county, saying they are planning an opt out this summer. He informed the group of a meeting in Pierre and let everyone know there is no other alternative as the county is broke and could go bankrupt.

It was suggested a sign be placed on the hwy that indicated where Main Street is. The membership approved having signs made up after they talk with the hwy department to see what can be done and where.

The next Chamber meeting will be July 18, with the location to be determined.
