Bituminous Paving, Inc. from Ortonville, Minn. has been awarded a $5.8 million dollar contract from the S.D. Department of Transportation. The contract was awarded for work on U.S. Highway 18 from Martin east to the S.D. Highway 73 north junction, as well as another three-mile long segment near the Bennett County line.
Work on the project includes cold milling of the existing surface, placement of new asphalt concrete pavement, upgrade of curb ramps in Martin itself to bring them into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, improvements to the junction of U.S. Highway 18 and 73 in Martin and a new traffic signal at that same junction.
Work is expected to begin on the project in early April and will last most of the summer. Work in the town of Martin will start immediately with the rest of the work east of Martin to follow.
The intersection renovation includes replacing the old traffic signals with Emergency Vehicle Preemption signals. This system automatically grants the right-of-way to first-response vehicles and will be one of the first to be utilized by the Winner DOT. The intersection will also be modified which will allow semis to maneuver the corners with less difficulty.
