Bennett County 4-H members brought together animals of every stripe during the 2013 Bennett County Fair on Friday, August 10.  The bunnies were fuzzy, the turtles were slow, and the pigs hard to keep clean.  More importantly, each animal at the Fair represented a 4-H member’s hard work this year caring for and learning about their animal – practicing good animal…

Fair Beef Quiz Bowl champions crowned

The Beef Quiz Bowl at the Bennett County Fair was held Friday afternoon, with 16 4-H members participating.

Team Risse/Hodson/Ireland took on team Smith/Johnson in the first Phase with the teams tied at 20 on the 1st round. After the second phase of questions,  team Smith/Johnson was up 50 to 30. The final score had the Smith/Johnson team winning with a score of 80.

Martin man sentenced for sexual abuse

United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that a Martin man convicted of Sexual Abuse of a Minor was sentenced on August 2, 2013, by Chief Judge Jeffrey L. Viken, U.S. District Court.

Edwin Johnson, 62, was sentenced to five years of imprisonment, followed by five years of supervised release. Johnson was also ordered to pay $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund and $542.40 in…

Martin Housing awarded $33,368

WASHINGTON – U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan awarded public housing authorities in South Dakota $1,565,032 that will be used to make major large-scale improvements to their public housing units. 

Martin Housing and Redevelopment Commission will receive $33,368.

Locals pack courthouse for County Opt Out community meeting

Bennett County resident Joe Jacquot organized a community meeting Aug. 7, at the Bennett County Courthouse to discuss the Opt Out, and the county jail status.

County Opt Out Special Election set for Tuesday, Sept. 24

In a special Bennett County Commissioners meeting held August 8, the commissioners voted to set the tax Opt Out Election for Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2013, with polls opening at 7 a.m. and closing at 7 p.m.

Novotny family recognized
