Pauline Nelson-Big Crow, 82, of Allen S.D., passed away December 9, 2012, in Martin.

Wake Service: Two night wake service starting Thursday December 13, at the American Horse School Gym, Allen.

Funeral services: 10 a.m., Saturday, December 15, also at the Gym

Officiating: Fr. Rick Abert S.J.

Burial: St. Ann’s Cemetery, Wolf Creek.

Survivors include her sons, Donroy Big Crow, Pine Ridge, Steve Coomes, Sioux Falls, Victor Coomes, Kyle, Xavier Big Crow, Rapid City, and Raymond Big Crow, Belle Fourche; daughters, Francine Big Crow-Little Bear, Pine Ridge, Tracy Big Crow-Mata, Cheyenne, Wyo., Nicole “Nicky” Big Crow, Allen, Dominique Big Crow-Cedar Face, Chadron, Neb., Melissa Slow Bear, Allen, Francinity Big Crow, Allen; sister, Ramona Tallman, Allen; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

Pauline Nelson –Big Crow was born on January 30, 1930, in Allen, to Patrick Nelson and Sally Little Hoop-Nelson. On December 9, 2012, Pauline Nelson-Big Crow left this world to join her beloved husband, Francis X Big Crow, in the Spirit World.

She received education at the Holy Rosary Mission. She was joined in marriage on May 25, 1956. Pauline and Francis “X” Big Crow, ranched and lived in various areas on the Pine Ridge Reservation. In the mid 1960’s they established their homestead north of Allen, where she enjoyed sewing, gardening, canning, and all the homemaking duties of a ranch wife.

Pauline’s love and compassion allowed her to love and care for many children that passed through her home. As a result of her love she raised five daughters and three sons. Four special great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. 

Pauline is survived by her girls, Francine Big Crow-Little Bear, Tracy Big Crow-Mata, Nicky Big Crow, Dominique Big Crow-Cedar Face and Melissa Slow Bear; her sons, Donroy Big Crow, Steve Coomes, Victor Coomes and Xavier Big Crow; special grandchildren, Raymond Big Crow, Francinity (Sheenie) Big Crow, TiAnna Big Crow, Jamie Big Crow, Kellie (Mousseau) Eagle Elk, Tanoa and Marcus Big Crow, Bailey McMillin, JaLeo Big Crow; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; her sister, Ramona Tallman; and special friends, Dave, Mary Kay and Sue Sell.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Patrick and Sally (Little Hoop) Nelson; sisters, Nancy Nelson-Black Horse, Cecelia Nelson- Tallman; and brother, Delbert Nelson. Waiting to welcome her to the Spirit World is her beloved husband Francis X Big Crow.
