Janis, Benjamin

Benjamin William Janis, 71, of Sturgis, S.D., passed away on December 26, 2018 at Fort Meade VA Hospital, Sturgis. He was a veteran of the United States Army.

Benjamin William Janis was born on December 28, 1946 in Pine Ridge to Benjamin J. Janis and Isabelle Clara (Clifford) Janis. Benjamin made his journey to the Spirit World on December 26 at the Fort Meade VA Hospital in Sturgis.

Benjamin is survived by his children, Benjamin Joseph Janis, Manderson, Arlen Ray Janis, Rapid City, and Lorilei Pauline Janis, Porcupine; brothers, Lawrence Janis, Hill  City, Terry Janis, Fargo, N.D., and Anthony Janis, Manderson; sisters, Kathleen Hayes, Albuquerque, N.M., Delores Starr and Rosalie Janis, both of Manderson, Linda Janis, Flandreau, and Janice Roman, Kinnear, Wyo.; grandchildren, Nichole Janis, William Janis, Virgil Janis, Arlen Janis, Jr., Nevada Janis, Cassidy Janis, Kelley Janis, Peyton Janis, Erin Janis, Paige Janis, Jasey Provost, Ashton Provost, and Kaylee Provost; great grandchildren, Aubrey Janis, Maria Janis, Violet Janis, and Amelia Janis; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Benjamin was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin J. and Isabelle (Clifford) Janis; and nephew, Teddy Lou Janis.

A one night wake service started at 3:30 p.m., Sunday, December 30 at the Wounded Knee District School in Manderson with vigil services starting at 7:00 p.m. with Military Roll Call following. 

Funeral Services started at 10:00 a.m., Monday, December 31 at the Wounded Knee District School.

Officiating were Ms. Joyce Tibbitts and Mr. Bill White. 

Traditional Lakota Services were officiated by Mr. Richard Broken Nose.

Burial Services were held at the Janis Family Cemetery, Manderson.

Arrangements entrusted with Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge.
