Florence Pearl (Wobig) Deaver, 96, passed away, January 27, 2019, in Martin, S.D., at Bennett County Hospital. Florence was born, April 29, 1922, near Cody Neb., in a house across the river from Frank and Lulu Heath’s home. Florence’s parents were Harvey Wilhelm Wobig, and Hazel Ord (Prahl) Wobig.
Their family moved to Bennett County, south of Tuthill, in the spring of 1928. That fall Florence attended school at the Brush Lake School. Her brother, Melvin, was born the same year. In 1932, the Wobig family moved back to Nebraska south of Cody. Florence and her brother, Melvin, rode horseback four miles to school on Conley Flat. In 1937, when Florence was 15 years old, she held her first job as a waitress at a small café in Cody. When she was 16 years old, she cleaned house and baby sat for John and Florence Shamis of Valentine. She lived in their house during that time.
On April 26, 1942, Florence married Charles Lee Deaver, at her parent’s home near Cody. On October 18, 1942, Lee was drafted to the service and deployed overseas with the European Theatres of war. While Lee was overseas, Florence worked in a defense plant, where she packed silk parachutes for the paratroopers, and reloaded canon shells in Hastings, Nebraska. Then she moved to Bellingham, Wash., where she shucked oysters to make extra money, until 1945. Lee was discharged from the service, in November of 1945.
Lee and Florence purchased a 320 acre farm south of Vetal. Lee raised cattle, and trapped mink, and beaver, and Florence raised turkeys to sell. On December 12, 1952, Dwight Lee was born, and Cindy Kay was born April 28, 1954. In 1958, Lee and Florence went into partnership on the Undine Jones ranch where they resided until 1975.
During their years of ranching, the family took two weeks each summer for a trip. Over eleven years they saw almost every National Park in the western half of the United States, including parts of Canada. Their traveling partners those years were the Lowell Bond family. They moved to the Harrington area in 1975 where they lived until 1978, when they moved back to their place south of Vetal.
Lee passed away on February 11, 1988; Florence lived south of Vetal, until the late 1990’s, when she moved to Martin. Florence was active with the Presbyterian Church, and was an active member of the Legion Auxiliary for 53 years.
