Mary Lawanda Her Many Horses Obit

Mary Lawanda (Plenty Holes) Her Many Horses was born at home in Rockyford, S.D., September 8, 1941, to George Plenty Holes and Louise (White) Plenty Holes. Lawanda, 78, of Manderson, made her journey to the Spirit World on December 25, 2019, at the I.H.S. Hospital in Pine Ridge.

Lawanda graduated from high school from Oglala Community School (OCS) and moved to Keystone, SD with her mother, Louise. She then moved to Denver for about 9 months with her mom and children, Francis and Kim. She attended Denver Metro College for Nursing. She completed her internship at Fitz Simmons Hospital for military veterans.

Lawanda moved back to Manderson, SD and started classes at Black Hills State College for her education degree. She started teaching at Manderson Day School (Wounded Knee District School). She worked as a teacher there for 25 years in various grades, departments and school programs.

She met her partner, Everett John Her Many Horses and they lived happily with their pow wow families for many years until they both completely retired.

Lawanda is survived by her children, Francis (Susie) Martin, Kim Martin and Madonna Her Many Horses; grandkids, Katana Jackson, Darnell Hawk, Tawanna Martin, Raymond Ghost Bear, Paul Martin, Eddie Ghost Bear, Francis “Yamni” Martin III, Maunie Ghost Bear, Traci Martin, Megan Martin, Dante Martin and Johnee Her Many Horses; and numerous great grandchildren.

Lawanda was preceded in death by her parents, George and Louise Plenty Holes; 12 sisters and brothers; and husband, Everett John Her Many Horses.

Pallbearers will be: Charles Waters, Jr., Eddie Ghost Bear, Raymond Ghost Bear, Paul Martin, Yamni Martin III, Dante Martin, Dominic Ray Ghost Bear, Luis Clifford, Derek Looks Twice, Robert Pille, and Robert Martin, Sr.

Honorary Pallbearers will be: Charlene Shoulders, Frances Cedar Face, Norma Tibbitts, Gaylen Westover, Bernice White Hawk, Lavona Twiss (Kocer), Tawanna Martin, Katana Jackson, Ramauna Ghost Bear, Kalla Ghost Bear, Mary Tail, Diana Yankton, Arlene Jumping Eagle, Karen Brown Bull, Pinky Clifford, Erma Maldonado, John Steele & Family, Red Cloud Family, Brewer Family, Shoulder Family, Oglala Community School Class of 1960, Rockyford Relatives, Manderson Community and All Friends & Relatives.

Wake Services: One night wake service starting at 2:00 PM, Thursday, January 2, 2020 at the St, Agnes Catholic Church Hall in Manderson, SD with rosary services starting at 7 PM.

Funeral Services: 10:00 AM, Friday, January 3, 2020 at the St. Agnes Catholic Church Hall in Manderson, SD
