Barbara June Belt was born May 26, 1954, in Pine Ridge, S.D., to Ambrose Belt and Elizabeth (Two Bulls) Belt. Barbara, 65, made her journey to the Spirit World on February 12, 2020, at her home in Red Shirt Table.
Barbara was born and raised on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. She attended St. Mary’s Episcopal School for Indian girls in Springfield, SD and graduated on May 19, 1973. Barbara completed her training for office management at United Sioux Tribes Technical College in Bismarck, ND. She married Humphrey Norbert Stands at the courthouse in Pine Ridge, SD. Barbara had vast experience with her education and work ethic guided by her strong spirit she found from her sobriety and moved her children off the reservation; she continued to provide for her family and community, living a sober and spiritual life.
Barbara is survived by her siblings, Caroline Slow Bear, Mary Belt, Charlotte Belt, Ambrose Belt, Jr., Ruby Star Comes Out, and Jackie Belt; children, Waylon Stands, Amber Stands, Sandra Stands, Dominick Stands, and Brenton Stands; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Ambrose and Elizabeth Belt; paternal grandparents, Frank and Lizzie (Walks Out) Belt; maternal grandparents, Pete & Martha (Helper) Two Bulls; and her son, Harry Stands.
Pallbearers will be Michael Catches Enemy, Jr., Wakiyan Hotan Catches Enemy, Hehaka Sapa Catches Enemy, Colton Wicker, Mike Salway, and Lee Larrabee.
Honorary pallbearers will be all friends and relatives.
Wake Services: One night wake service starting at 1:00 PM, Friday, February 21, 2020 at the Red Shirt Table School Gymnasium in Red Shirt Table with evening services starting at 7:00 PM.
Funeral Services: 10:00 AM, Saturday, February 22, 2020 at the Red Shirt Table School Gymnasium in Red Shirt Table, SD
