Minerva Corrine Bear Killer Obit

Minerva Corrine Bear Killer, Canku Luta Akan Mani Win, was born October 23, 1958, at home in Allen, S.D., to Rolland Bear Killer Sr. and Mary Agnes (Landeau) Bear Killer. Minerva, 62, made her journey to the Spirit World on March 4, 2020, at her home in Allen. Minerva was a seamstress and made countless star quilts. She enjoyed making star quilts, as it was her hobby. Minerva also worked as a cook for Anpetu Luta Otipi. She enjoyed working with children and adults. In the past, she had also driven the Elderly Meals Program van to deliver food to the elders. She loved to visit with them and help them with their needs.

Minerva was currently employed as a federal monitor for 10 years. She was recently elected as Chairwoman of North Corn Creek Community- the largest community of the Pass Creek District. She enjoyed working for the people. Minerva was a part of the Wounded Knee Occupation in the 1970’s. She always told memories of her joining the AIM Movement.

Minerva loved all her children and would help them in any way that she could. She lived out in the country raising chickens and horses. She was making star quilts for her nephew, Mekko Bear Killer and granddaughter, Cammi LaRae Bear Killer both of whom are graduating college. She was so proud of them and her grandchildren who have graduated high school. She was also proud of her eldest granddaughter, LaQuita White who graduated and is close to getting her CAN license. The last of her star quilts will be displayed in July 2020 during the graduation honoring.

Minerva Bear Killer is a strong Lakota Winyan. She had a good life and enjoyed going to the casino with her children and niece, Rae Bear Killer.

Minerva is survived by her special friend, Michael McBride; grandson, George Cortier, Jr., sons, Charles (Charlene) Cortier, Sr., Stacy (Lucy) Cortier, Andrew (Deanna) Cortier, George (Angie) Cortier, and Tyler (Jamie) Cortier; daughters, Cherrylynn (Beth Red Owl) Cortier and Jessie (Daryl) Cortier; sisters, Lydia Bear Killer, Ethel Swallow, Wilma (Delmar) Leonard, Darlene (Sheldon) Bear Killer, and Rhonda Tallman; brothers, Roland (Lisa) Bear Killer, Jr., Larry (Arlana) Bear Killer, Frank Bear Killer, and Ralph Bear Killer, Jr.

Minerva was preceded in death by her parents, Rolland, Sr. and Mary Bear Killer; son, Judd Cortier; granddaughter, Carly Cortier; grandson, Rolland James Bear Killer; grandparents, Frank & Jessie (Walks Underground) Bear Killer, Orville Landeau, and Sophie Rouillard; and nephews, Leroy Bear Killer.

Pallbearers will be Charles Cortier, Jr., George Cortier, LJ Bear Killer, Arlyn Primeau, Mekko Bear Killer, Damian Lafferty, Cornell Reddest, Andrew Cortier, Tyler Cortier, Sam Bear Killer, Ryan Bear Killer, Buck Tallman, Emmanuel Bear Killer, Brian Swallow, Dean Bear Killer, and MJ Dillon.

Wake Services: Two night wake services starting at 1:00 PM, Monday, March 16, 2020 at the American Horse School in Allen, SD with evening services starting at 7:00 PM each night of the wake services.
