Walter Edward Swan, Sr., “Oyate Naji Kiniji” (Stands for the People), 85, of Pine Ridge, S.D., passed away November 12, 2020, in Casper, Wyo.
Walter “Walt” Edward Swan, Sr. was born on June 8, 1935, in White Horse to Murphy Swan and Pearl Miner. Walter made his journey to the Spirit World on November 12, 2020, at the Wyoming Medical Center in Casper. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army.
Walter is survived by his wife, Barbara (Crazy Thunder) Swan; daughter, Carlene (Ralph) Byington; sons, Walter (Lena) Swan, Jr., Isaac Swan, and Michael Red Cloud; stepsons, John Red Cloud and Richard Bruguier; sister, Cordelia Mills; brother, Merrill Thompson; 15 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Walter was preceded in death by his mother, Pearl Miner; father, Murphy Caleb Swan; sister, Clarrissia Tobias; brothers, Carroll Swan, Sr., Orlando Swan, Sr., and Morlan “Rusty” Swan, Sr.; daughters, Debra Douglas, Cheryl Bentley, Clarinda Herrold and Charlene Flying By; son, Wade Thomas Red Cloud; grandson, Spencer Swan; and granddaughter, Elizabeth Flying By.
Visitation services were held from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 17, at the Sioux Funeral Home in Pine Ridge.
Wake services were held from 3:00 p.m. – 12:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 17, at the Woyatan Lutheran Church in Rapid City, with evening services starting at 7:00 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 18, at the Woyatan Lutheran Church in Rapid City, with Minister Jonathan Old Horse officiating.
Burial services will be held at 12:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 18, at the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis.
