Danny Geersen
Danny LeRoy Geersen, 78, passed away on May 6, 2021, at the Monument Health Hospital in Rapid City.
He was the only son born to Harold L. Geersen and Elizabeth Leone Hurston on May 21, 1942, in Gordon, Neb. He joined one sister, Donita Rene.
Danny attended grade school in Martin and graduated from Bennett County High School with the extraordinary class of 1960. It was told that Danny would sneak out of class to go home to farm. That was the good old days when kids at the age of fourteen could drive themselves to school and no doubt elsewhere. He was active in 4-H, athletics and FFA.
On June 22, 1963, wedding bells were ringing for the farm boy who grew up on the family farm west of Martin and knew that was where he wanted to remain with his new wife Paula Marie Thayer, daughter of Harvey and Christine (Sears) Thayer of Merriman, Neb. The wedding took place at the Methodist Church in Gordon. To this union two sons, Calvin Richard and Marvin Lee, and one daughter Holly Rede, were born.
He was active in his community for many years being involved in the Presbyterian Church, 4-H, Masons, South Dakota Beef Council and served on the National Cattleman’s Beef Association during the 1990s. He was a good dancer and enjoyed square dancing. He loved going to polka festivals where he would dance until the band stopped playing. Books, newspapers and magazines were well read and he always had a to-do list going and carried a small note book in his shirt pocket. Quite often he would have the answer to our many questions in his pocket sized filing cabinet.
Danny loved his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Keeping in touch with them was fun and important to him. Texting was a great way for him to communicate. He had a generous nature, mischievous sense of humor and a sincere dedication to family, friends and the family farming/ranching business. He worked hard and loved much.
He is survived by his wife Paula; son Calvin (Karen), grandson Cody and great grandson Addam, Martin; son Marvin (Karla), granddaughters Amanda (Zane) Tibke, great grandson Elijah Tibke, Rapid City; Brittany Geersen (Austin Schmitt), Tempe, Ariz.; Cassidy Geersen, Vermillion; Darcy Geersen, Rapid City; daughter Holly Geersen (Mark Pena), grandson Malakai Geersen-Pena, Aurora, Colo.; sister Donita (Orval) Uden, Sheldon, Iowa; nieces Tanya (John) Uden-Holman, grandnephews Elis and Rhys Holman, Iowa City, Iowa; Tracy Uden (Kelly Pope), Grand Junction, Colo.; close cousins Margee (Lloyd) Willey, Wasta; Cheri Runner (Lynn) Shuck, Spearfish; and many relatives and friends.
Memorial Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 21, at the Lindsay Memorial Presbyterian Church in Martin. Inurnment will be scheduled for a later date.
