Shirley May (Lyon) Wingert

Shirley May (Lyon) Wingert, 78, of Midland, Mich. died Wednesday evening, December 15, 2021 at the MidMichigan Medical Center. She was born August 25, 1943 in Kadoka, South Dakota, daughter of the late Harvey Gerald Lyon and Norma Phyllis (Robbins) Lyon.

Shirley graduated from Bennett County High School in 1961. She earned her teaching degree from Black Hills State University. On May 25, 1963 she married David Leon Wingert in Rapid City, and they moved to Midland that same year. She was a longtime member of the Wesley Chapel in Midland. She served as the church’s treasurer, and was very active in the church community. Shirley also volunteered her service with several Midland organizations.

She will be missed by her husband of fifty-eight years, David; children, David Harvey Wingert, Ypsilanti, Mich., Jennifer Joyce (Wingert) VanGelder and David Anthony VanGelder, Rochester Hills, Mich., Raymond Joseph Wingert and Elaine (Miller) Wingert, Franklin, Ind., and Susan Marie (Wingert) Lovelette and Lee Howard Lovelette, Lapeer, Mich.; brothers and sisters, Jerald (Anne) Lyon, Dennis (Annette) Lyon, Jean Trucano, and Phyllis Long; ten grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren; also numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Neil Lyon and David Lyon.

Services to celebrate Shirley’s life were held Sunday, December 19, 2021 at the Ware Smith Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 West Wheeler Street in Midland Mich., with Reverend James Barnhart officiating. Final interment will take place in South Dakota.
