Judith Smittle Fanning

Judith Rose Smittle Fanning was born to Noel A. and Rose R. (Barquin) Smittle October 11, 1938, at Ft. Washakie, Wyo. Judy passed December 27, 2021, in Mitchell, S.D., surrounded by immediate family. Judy enjoyed a childhood filled with extended family, shepherd camps in the mountains, and fishing. She graduated from Morton School in 1956, and continued her education at Black Hills Teachers College in Spearfish. While pursuing her art degree she met her husband, James C. Fanning, Jr. They were married June 28, 1958, at St Margaret’s Catholic Church in Riverton, Wyo.

They settled on a ranch on the edge of the Sand Hills outside of Martin. There they raised four children: Rosanne, Teresa Kay, James Alexander, and Jeannie. Judy learned to cook for hay crews and brandings, garden, and provision for a working ranch and whoever dropped by. She became known for her warm welcome, her generous nature that was always willing to help, her easy laugh, and her inability to meet a stranger.

Judy took her skills to the kitchen of the Martin School District until she moved with Glenn Bostock to Riverton, to care for her father until his passing. There she became re-acquainted with childhood family and friends; and made many new friends. Judy discovered her passion for fishing in the mountains and streams of the area. Besides fishing, she enjoyed exploring the events of area, and taking visitors on these adventures.

Judy’s smile, gentle teasing, loving heart will be missed by her children; Rosanne Fanning-Summerside, Pierre; Teresa Fay, Port Orchard, Wash.; James (Lois) Fanning, Olivet; Jeannie (CJ) Matteson, Sioux Falls; her grandchildren Ben Curnow, Daniel Curnow, Angela Brown, George Summerside, Talisha Roos, Kelsey Blankenship, Kayla Wickum, Cameron J. Fanning, Liam Matteson, and Asher Matteson with eleven great-grandchildren. Judy’s extended family and friends across the nation are grateful to have received her love and friendship.

Celebrations of Life are being planned for Martin, and Riverton, in late July. More information will be forthcoming.
