John Conquering Bear, Sr.

John Conquering Bear, Sr., 74, of Hisle, S.D., passed away April 3, 2022, in Hisle.

John Conquering Bear, Sr. was born on October 29, 1947, in Allen, to Joshua Conquering Bear, Sr. and Edith D. (Marshall) Conquering Bear. John made his journey to the Spirit World on April 3, 2022, at his home in Hisle.

John was a public safety officer for the Oglala Sioux Tribe for ten years, a semi-truck driver, and most recently a concrete finisher for Rosane Cement. In John’s earlier years, he helped move homes with Jerry Becker. 

John is survived by his spouse, Sally Douthit; daughters, Hope Conquering Bear and Connie Conquering Bear; sons, John Conquering Bear (Janis), Richard Conquering Bear, Peter Conquering Bear, Isadore Conquering Bear, Jr., Ron Conquering Bear, Alex Richards, and Michael Conquering Bear; brother, David Conquering Bear; sisters, Wilma Leonard and Christina Conquering Bear; nephews, Doug (Nicki) Johnson, Tristan Conquering Bear, Joshua Shangreaux, Joshua Conquering Bear-Drown, Tilden Reddest, Norman “Denver” Bianas, and Lloyd Bianas; nieces, Jeanine Johnson, Missy Cluff, Carmella Conquering Bear-Drown, and Krista Richards; his dog, Bear; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. 

John was preceded in death by his parents, Edith D. Marshall-Conquering Bear and Joshua Conquering Bear, Sr.; sons, Joseph Conquering Bear and Gordon Standing Bear; brothers, Martin Conquering Bear, Joshua Conquering Bear, Jr., Doug Conquering Bear, Jack Conquering Bear, and Chris Conquering Bear; sister, Margie Conquering Bear-Morrison; and grandchildren, Devin Conquering Bear and Baby Boy Conquering Bear.

Pallbearers will be Merle Hicks, Justin Smokov, Craig Dillon, Nick DuBray, Norman Standing Soldier, Kenny Rosane, Wynn Saxton, and Dylan Siscoe. 

Honorary pallbearers will be Roxanne Cottier, Emily Dillon, Sandy Two Lance, Connie LeBeau, Faith Shangreaux, Janice Jernigan, Adrienne Hicks, Zona White Woman, Randy Bettelyoun, Bud May, Fred Bush, Sr., Robert Porch, Marvin Grass, Jerry Becker, Terry and Donna Smokov, Jim Knuth, Vergil Clausen, Charlie Cummings, Sr., Frank Mueller, Mike Pisha, Barry Bentley, Lloyd Two Crow, Sr., Tim Palmer, Clarence Allen, Elil Poor Bear, Doug and Susie Justus, Martin Auto Parts Staff, Rosane Family, Ron Duke, Dr. Cazan, LaCreek and Kyle I.H.S. Staff, and All Friends and Relatives. 

A one night wake service started at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, April, 12, at the New Martin American Legion in Martin, with evening services at 7:00 p.m. 

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 13, at the New Martin American Legion with final viewing starting at 9:00 a.m. with Father Tyler Dennis officiating.

Burial services were held at the Inestimable Gift Episcopal Cemetery, Allen.
