Delano McCollam

The family of Delano McCollam, 71, is sad to announce that he passed away early on Sunday, October 14, 2012. 

Del was born on the family homestead near Dixon, S.D. on March 30, 1941 to Benjamin and Esther (Engel) McCollam. 

He leaves behind his wife of 30 years, Lavonne (Sharp) McCollam; his children, Lucy (Hysell-McCollam) Atteberry, Diana (McCollam) Samples, Teresa (McCollam) Franzen, Kelvin McCollam, John McCollam, Laurie McCollam, and Kimberly McCollam; fifteen grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren; his siblings, Philip McCollam, John McCollam, Rosemary (McCollam) Hartland, David McCollam, Floyd McCollam, and Virginia (McCollam) Huettmann; many cousins, brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his older sister Dortha, his older brother Steve; his nephews: William, Donald, and Richard; and his niece, Lisa.

Del grew up on the family farm where he learned the strong work ethic that endured until his final days. He, along with his siblings, attended grade school at the Lincoln School House near their home, and he attended high school in Winner. He went on to work in construction for the next five decades.

Del’s great love and passion was for his family, and he had a special love for children. He was a mountain of strength to his children, and his unconditional love never faltered. His life was marked by his great compassion, patience, generosity, and kindness. He was a good friend to many, and he was always willing to extend hospitality or financial assistance to those in need. 

Those who knew Del McCollam learned to trust his intellect, his integrity, and his humanity. He was loved and appreciated by many, and he will be greatly missed. 

Services will be officiated by Deacon Calvin Clifford, and held at the American Legion Hall in Martin, October 18, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. Burial services will follow.
