Amelia “Emmy” (Vavra) Toczek was born on October 7, 1915, to Anton and Rose (Peterka) Vavra in Yankton, S.D. On May 1, 1933, she was married to Oscar Toczek. In 1938 the Toczeks moved to Bennett County to farm with Emmy’s parents. In 1942 they moved their family to a farm near Kyle. They farmed and ranched in the Kyle area until 1966 when they bought the Skyline Motel in Hot Springs. They operated the motel for about 2 1/2 years. After selling the motel they moved to Cheyenne, Wyo. to manage a motel. Over the next several years they moved from Cheyenne, Wyo., to Allen, S.D., and Chadron, Neb., before settling in Martin in the early 1980’s. After Oscar’s death in 1998, Emmy continued living in Martin until November 2007. At that time she moved to Omaha to be near her daughter Barb. Emmy and Oscar had 4 children, Donald, Delmar, Barbara and Patricia. She was preceded in death by her parents, Anton and Rose; husband, Oscar; 3 children, Donald, Delmar (Joyce), and Patricia; and 3 siblings, George, Edward, and Bessie.
Survivors include her daughter, Barb, Omaha; brother, Denny, Crookston, Neb., 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, October 29, at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church, Martin, with Father Bryan Sorenson officiating. Burial was held at the Gordon cemetery.
Bennett County Funeral Services was in charge of arrangements.
