By Coach Brent Ireland
The Warrior wrestling team opened up its season this past week with a meet against Red Cloud and Hill City on Tuesday and then followed that up on Saturday with a trip to Ft. Pierre and the Stanley County Invite.
We have a very young team this year with nearly one third of our kids being first year wrestlers. However, with 22 kids in the room, we have a great compliment of athletes and for the first time in several years are able to fill all 14 weight classes!
The trip to Red Cloud was a good first event for us as it allowed us to see what we’ve been able to successfully get coached in the first two weeks of practice and where we still need to work in terms of the fundamentals. For the most part, it was a very good showing from our squad. Individual results are not available.
The Stanley Co. Invite was definitely a good early test for us as a team with 12 teams and 34 rated wrestlers.
Teams competing (in order of finish): Burke/Gregory (B/G) 223.5, Spearfish-Lead/Deadwood (SLD) 217.5, Bennett Co (BC) 181.5, Stanley Co (SC) 170, Potter Co (PC) 155, Todd Co (TC) 103, Newell (N) 101, Lyman (L) 77, Mobridge/Pollock (M/P) 77, Lemmon/McIntosh (L/M) 72, Cheyenne Eagle Butte/Dupree (CEBD) 32.5, Sully Buttes (SB) 30.
Placing third in a tournament of this caliber is an indication of the depth of our team this year. This was our first year competing at this tournament which hurt our ability to get good individual seeds (seeds were based mostly on last years’ tournament results). That meant we were facing an uphill battle in the team race. However, we were able to score points in most of the weight classes placing 12 wrestlers in all.
While we didn’t place anyone in the first three weight classes, we did gain some very valuable experience and saw some really good things out of these young, mostly first year wrestlers.
Tate Petrak picked up a 7th place finish and had a fine day overall. Cody Larson avenged his only loss of the tournament in the medal round picking up a third place finish.
Sam Ireland had perhaps one of the deepest weight classes with four rated wrestlers. He won a nail biter against the 7th rated kid from CEBD in the semi’s and then dropped a one point match in the finals to the 4th rated wrestler from SC.
Chandler Bakley showed off his leg riding skills on his way to a 6th place finish while Brady Hicks and Tyler Bakley ended up wrestling each other for 5th place. Both had fine outings. Brad Hahn also placed 5th.
Joe Merrival is a nice addition to our team this year and was perhaps the surprise of the tournament moving from a 5th seed to a 2nd place finish. Joe beat the 10th rated wrestler from B/G in the semi’s but was defeated by the 7th rated kid from SLD in the finals.
Dalton McCollam was our loan champion with a dominating performance in every match.
Marcus Heath stepped up a weight class and wrestled well picking up two pins on his way to a 5th place finish. Todd Vander May also had a fine tournament placing 2nd. Todd was leading for most the finals match but got caught in the final seconds.
Sawyer Rous had two top rated kids in his bracket but was able to defeat the balance of the competition on his way to a third place finish.
It was nice to see the kids trying many of the things we’ve been drilling in practice. While they weren’t always successful, it does give us some things to fine tune and should give the kids confidence going forward that these are things that can be successful for them in the future.
