Bennett County puts away Gordon-Rushville falls to St. Francis and Lyman

Bennett County rebounded from a Tuesday pounding to put a hurt on Gordon-Rushville Friday, but lost to Lyman Saturday in a busy week of boys basketball action.

Dec. 11, the St. Francis boys basketball team shot out of the gates with a 15-0 first quarter lead, then put a 67-39 pounding on Bennett County in Martin.

The host Bennett County team trailed 17-0 before Wade Porch ended the misery when he scored and was fouled for a three point play with 6:34 left in the first half. 

Porch went on to score eight second quarter points and Gassam Shangreaux added five, but the hosts trailed 34-13 at the half.

Bennett County could not find their range in the second half and the visiting Warriors ran away with a 67-39 win.

In the JV game, Bennett County pulled out a 43-39 win in  a very good game.

Gassem Shangreaux scored 15 and Derek Vander May 11 for solid games for Bennett County. Keith Hodson added 10, Chris Begeman 5 and Lattrel Richards 2. 

The boys from Bennett County rebounded from that loss nicely and played well for a convincing 66-42 win against Gordon-Rushville Friday evening in Martin for the final game of a boys and girls double  header.

The Warriors scored the games first six points before rolling to a 19-7 first quarter ending lead. Keali’i Heath sparked the offense with eight points, all by attacking the basket. Wade Porch had a solid first quarter too with seven points, including a three pointer with four seconds remaining.

Heath scored the first four points of the second quarter and Roy Risse added a field goal and the Warriors were up 25-8.

The Mustang’s Chaz Piper made it a 27-15 game with a three pointer, but Bennett County wrapped up the first half with a 9-2 run, taking a 36-19 lead at the break.

A 6-0 run to start the third for Bennett County extended the lead to 23 and the Warriors ended the third with a 58-31 lead. In the third Jacob Waln put up seven points for the home team.

Bennett County wrapped up the 66-42 win to improve to 2-1.

“That was the first zone we faced this year and the boys executed well,” said coach Joe Waln. “We attacked the rim really well and the guys communicated with each other well. We are making a lot of strides.”

Keali’i Heath led the offense with 18 points and Wade Porch added 15. Jacob Waln had 13, Lattrel Richards 7, Gassem Shangreaux 6, Keith Hodson 3, Roy Risse 2, Kyler Rayhill 2.

In the JV game, Gordon-Rushville pulled out a 28-23 win.

Gassem Shangreaux led the way with 8 points, and Keith Hodson added 7. Lattrel Richards tossed in 5, Derek Vander May 2 and Sage Alexander 1. 

On Saturday, Dec. 15, the team traveled to Lyman, losing 62-31, to end a long week of basketball.

No other stats were available for the Lyman game.
