Wrestlers grapple well at two tournaments Third at 19 team Hot. Sp.

The Bennett County High School wrestling team competed in two tournaments this past week. On Tuesday, we traveled to Pine Ridge for the West River Conference tourney. Teams competing (in order of finish): Todd Co. 210, Bennett Co. 187, Pine Ridge 120, Red Cloud 41, and Little Wound 22.

This was a tournament that we thought going in we had a chance to win. We did end up with seven champions out of 14 weight classes, but we just weren’t able to finish strong in a few key match-ups that kept us from the team title. However, we will see these same teams several more times this season and should get some rematches.

Individual Results from the West River Conference meet:

106 – Shawn Marrs (4th)

113 – Tagg Petrak (2nd)

120 – Tyler Byrne (DNP)

126 – Adam Hahn (4th)

132 – Tate Petrak (3rd)

138 – Sam Ireland (1st), Cody Larson (2nd)

145 – Chandler Bakley (1st)

152 – Brady Hicks (1st)

160 – Joe Merrival (1st), Tyler Bakley (3rd), Marcus Harris (DNP), Rhett Fanning (DNP)

170 – Brad Hahn (1st)

182 – Dalton McCollam (1st)

195 – Marcus Heath (1st)

220 – Todd Vander May (DNP)

285 – Sawyer Rous (2nd)

This past weekend we spent two days in Hot Springs competing in a 19-team, 2-day tournament. Teams competing (in order of finish): Spearfish-Lead/Deadwood 259.5, Douglas-New Underwood-RC Christian 186, Bennett Co. 183, Hot Springs 143.5, Custer 139.5, RC Stevens JV 114, Newell 113.5, RC Central JV 113.5, Hill City 111.5, Lyman 101, Hay Springs 79, Sturgis JV 77.5, Lingle/Ft. Laramie 56, St. Thomas More 42, Harding Co 40, Pine Ridge 37, Crawford 30, Little Wound 13, Belle Fourche 7.5.

Spearfish-Lead/Deadwood ran away with the team title but we were in a dog fight for 2nd throughout the tournament. We placed 11 kids and had a pretty good tournament overall. We seemed more ready to wrestle than we did at the tournament on Tuesday. Had Cody Larson (illness - 132) been able to make the trip, there’s no question we would have ended up 2nd as a team against some pretty good competition.

As a coach, you always see things that need improvement, but really we’ve made a lot of progress since the beginning of the season and have had our share of success. We now have a three week break to get healthy, spend some time watching film, and do a bit more individualized coaching.

Our next tournament will be in Lyman and will be our toughest tournament yet.
