Bennett County took on the Hot Springs Bison Friday night in Martin and the 11A visitors flexed their muscle on their way to a convincing 44-0 win.
Hot Springs scored 13 first quarter points on a pair of one yard runs by Kalub Wilson and a kick after by Matt Norton.
Morgan Harkless added a 3 yard run and after Norton’s kick the Bison were up 20-0
The Warriors played good defense, stopping the Bison twice, once on an interception by Isaiah Johnson with 3:19 to go in the half. The Warriors offense would sputter and after going for it on fourth down near their own goal line, do not get it and turn it over to the Bison with 1:56 to play in the half.
Thane Lockhart made them pay with a 2 yard run, making it a 28-0 lead at the half following Norton’s run for the two point conversion.
The Warriors had the ball first in the second half and again went for it on fourth down and again did not make the first down line and turned the ball over to Hot Springs at the 36 yard line of the Warriors. Jared Harris picked off a Bison pass at the 15 and took it out to the 25 for the Warriors.
The Bison answered back with an interception of Shawn Saxton’s pass, taking it to the Warrior 18 yard line. Riley Abbott scored on a 4 yard run to make it 34-0.
Hot Springs would add a touchdown on a 32 yard pass play with Harkless connecting with Matt Norton. Norton then kicked it through for a 41-0. Norton then later kicked a 25 yard field goal for the games final points.
“We started out sluggish Friday night,” said head coach Tucker Risse. “It was a trying game for us. Hot Springs is a good football team. You can tell they put the work in to become a better athlete in the weight room. They are a class above us and that does make a difference as well when you take a look at their schedule. However, when I take a look at the heart of our kids and their fight and determination, I am proud. We have a group of kids that fight each week to get better no matter what the circumstances may be and a coaching staff willing to help them along the way.”
“Come on out again this Friday night as Pine Ridge comes to town,” said Risse.
