Falcons use big plays to edge Warriors, 20-13

By Tim Huether

The Todd County Falcons used two big second half plays to rally from a 7-6 halftime deficit, to take a 20-13, hard fought win over the visiting Bennett County Warriors Friday night in high school football action.

In a good balanced first half, both teams put points on the board, but Bennett County’s Wade Porch kicked the point after for the difference as the Warriors led 7-6 at the half.

Bennett County marched from the 13 all the way to the one yard line where Warrior quarterback Joe Merrivel kept the ball and scored to make it 6-0 with 10:43 to play in the second quarter. Wade Porch booted the extra point through for the 7-0 lead.

Todd County started on their 27 and moved up the field, scoring on a Clyde Colombe 29 yard run with 5:35 to play in the half. The kick after was missed, keeping the Warriors on top by one point. That would be the score at the first half break.

In the third quarter, the Falcons were facing a third and 11 when they pulled off a double reverse for a reverse from 47 yards out with 8:04 to play in the third. They ran the conversion in  for two points and a 14-7 lead.

Three big back to back penalties on the Warriors on their next drive helped set up the Falcons with excellent field position at the Warriors 35 yard line.

The Falcons fumbled the ball on the next play and Bennett County’s Joe Merrival recovered at the 32 yard line.

The Warriors moved down the field and tried a 38 yard field goal, but Porch’s kick was just wide left.

On the Falcons next possession, a reverse sets up another reverse for a touchdown with 11:02 to play in the game. The kick after was no good for a 20-7.

Bennett County wasted little time getting back in the game as Merrival found Sam Ireland open on the left side and Ireland ran it in for a 16 yard touchdown. The Porch kick after was no good, making it 20-13 with 9:49 to play in the game.

Both defenses made some big stops late in the game. Bennett County made a gallant effort with some just miss passes, but the Falcons held on for the win.
