Harris, Allen, Ireland place at State B Wrestling Tournament
By Tim Huether
Bennett County qualified five wrestlers for the State B Wrestling Tournament last weekend and three came home with medals — Tee Allen, Jared Harris and Weston Ireland. The Warriors finished in 20th place as a team.
Harris and Allen won their first two matches, assuring them of at least a sixth place finish, then each went on to finish fourth.
Allen had little trouble Friday with a pair of convincing wins. After falling in the semi-finals, Tee wrestled well to earn fourth place. The senior wrapped up a fine career at Bennett County, picking up 38 wins on the season.
Harris took the tough route, winning a pair of overtime matches on the opening day. The junior lost in the semi-finals, then picked up a win, and fell in his third overtime match of the tournament on Saturday evening to earn fourth place.
Warrior junior Weston Ireland had a solid tournament, picking up sixth place at the 160-pound weight class. His losses came to the third, fourth and fifth place finishers at the tournament.
Kurtis Mooney lost his first match, then won a close 8-6 decision in match two, but fell out of medal contention after losing his third match of the day on Friday. Kurtis, a senior, finished the year with a 26-14 record.
Eighth grader Mason Heath had a pair of very tough matches, but look for big things out of Mason down the road. He picked up 32 wins this year.
“We had a good State Tournament this last weekend,” said head coach Jon Pierson. “Mason Heath and Kurtis Mooney went in as non-seeded wrestlers and both had really tough draws. It was Mason’s first trip to the state tournament and he wrestled hard, but was out-matched in what was one the toughest brackets in the entire tournament. Kurtis also had a tough draw, but still managed a win. His two losses came to the kids who got fourth and sixth place respectively. Kurtis ends his career with 115 wins and three state tournament appearances.”
“Weston Ireland entered the state tournament for the second time in his career after going two and out last year.” added Pierson. “Weston battled to earn 6th place ending a 41-win season with a bang. Jared Harris came into the tournament seeded sixth and wrestled tough to a fourth place finish. He beat the third, fifth and 11th rated kids this weekend. It was a good end to a 46 win season. Tee Allen bumped up from 195 pounds to wrestled at 220. He won his region and was seeded fifth in the state tournament. After pinning his first opponent, he handily beat the fourth ranked kid in the state. He lost in the semifinal match to the number one rated kid, but came back to beat the number six before narrowly falling to the third rated kid in the third and fourth place match. Tee ends his career with two state places and 144 wins.”
