Bennett County kicked off the 2019 football season in Martin last Friday night, hosting Lead-Deadwood, falling 39-0 to the Golddiggers.
The visitors didn’t take long to flash their speed as Jordy Stulken took the opening kickoff and sprinted 78 yards for a touchdown. The run for conversion failed making it a 6-0 Digger lead.
Bennett County found themselves in an early hole on offense with a first down and 20 yards to go, but a couple of nice runs, capped by a 14 yarder by quarterback Weston Ireland, and they had a first down and momentum.
The Warriors fortunes quickly shifted when Stulken intercepted an Ireland pass at the 39 yard line and turned on the jets for another quick touchdown for Lead-Deadwood. The conversion failed making it 12-0 with 9:03 to go in the first quarter.
