O’Neills make mark at State Track Meet

By Tim Huether

Bennett County seventh grader Reagan O’Neill represented Bennett County well at the South Dakota State Track and Field Meet last week finishing seventh in the 100 meters and seventh in the long jump. She competed in four events at the meet.

She had a good run going in the 100 meter hurdles in the prelims, but caught her toe on the second to last hurdle and fell to the track. At the time, she was in third, right with the top two in her heat, which was a fast one, and she likely would have made the finals in that event too if not for the fall.

She participated in the 200 meters also, finishing 15th with a 27.66.

In the 100 meter prelims, she ran a 12.52 to put her in the finals in the fifth position. She ran a 12.73 in the finals.

In the long jump, she jumped 16’ 3.25” and tied for sixth, but after they used criteria to break a tie, she received seventh.

Rush O’Neill, just an eighth grader, finished 18th in the 110 meter hurdles, an event usually dominated by upperclassmen. Rush was the only runner who was not in high school in the event.
